NEWS

Bible Project = Big Change

big news at Menges Design

There are layers to this news, but I don't want this post to be like Googling a recipe where you wade through nine paragraphs of backstory before the actual recipe. It’s sweet to hear about grandma inventing overnight oats in 1910, but… recipe, please!

If you saw this post, you know change was the topic:

  • Praying for more faith-based creative work

  • Hoping to grow the business through another retainer relationship

I wasn’t sure how (or if) those changes would occur, but here’s the news:

  1. Last week I began a full time role as creative director for BibleProject, the Portland-based animation studio that I’ve admired for years. After two former students, Cam and Adam, joined the BibleProject team last year, I followed the company on LinkedIn, saw the CD job post and applied. Throughout the interview process, I grew more excited about the opportunity to serve this generous, talented team. Their focus is tight, and their standards are high. My excitement continues as I meet the team and learn more.

  2. With full time focus on BibleProject, Menges Design will scale down to a single project: a part-time, but longstanding branding retainer with The Fort. This retainer provides Menges Design a studio inside The Fort, where I’ll work remotely for BibleProject. I’ll still carve time for drawing on walls, mentoring, and weekend workshops at the studio.

Reducing Menges Design to a side gig was definitely not on my radar. Especially with the hard push to realign Menges Design since last Fall. But now, here, saying Yes to serving a larger team and mission is a clear answer to the questions Where go? What do? Another moment to get out of my own way, embrace change and trust God at every step through the unknown—all of that an ongoing struggle. Much to learn and do as I grow into this role, but I feel like a kid running wide-eyed into the dappled light of summer woods and new adventures.

P.S. The cycling cap I’m wearing is a limited batch, made by Fat Hatter in Japan, embroidered locally in Columbus by Wes at Scioto Made. You can buy it from me directly: Venmo $40 to “djmenges” and tell me where you want it shipped.
